Objectives

·        Define matter and know general characteristics of the 3 states of matter and the interconversions of them

·        Know the types of matter and be able to identify materials as either elements, compounds, or mixtures

·        Know how to identify if a mixture is heterogeneous or homogeneous

·        Know the difference between a physical and chemical properties as well as intensive and extensive property

·        Know the difference between a physical and chemical change and be able to identify them

·        Be familiar with the prefixes of the metric system of measurement and of the temperature scales

·        Be able to convert measurements using dimensional analysis

·        Be able to convert between the 3 different temperature scales

·        Understand the meaning of an exact vs. measured number ( uncertainty)

·        Determine the number of significant figures in a measurement and express answers to calculations in the proper number of significant digits

·        Be able to calculate density and understand its importance

·        Understand the difference between accuracy and precision
