Atoms, Molecules and Ions Study
Guide
Objectives
- Know some history of atomic structure(
Democritus, Dalton)
- Know the components of Dalton’s Atomic theory
and how it was modified
- Know the main experiments that led to the basic
structure of the atom( JJ Thomson, Rutherford)
- Know the characteristics of the 3 subatomic
particles ( protons, electrons, and neutrons) and be able to describe
their location in the atom
- Be able to calculate protons, electrons, and
neutrons from atomic and mass number
- Be able to write the nuclear symbol and/or
hyphen notation for atoms
- Define isotope
- Know the difference between an atom, ion, and
molecule
- Be able to know the charges for common monatomic
ions and polyatomic ions
- Be able to write chemical formulas for ionic
compounds and covalent compounds
- Be able to name chemical compounds for ionic and
molecular compounds
- Be able to name simple acids (nonoxyacids and
oxyacids) and write their chemical formulas
- Have a basic knowledge of the families of the
periodic table
- Be able to predict whether a elements is a
metal, nonmetal, or semimetals as
well as the charges of ions
