Every student begins this class with an “A”.   It is up to YOU to maintain it!

This challenging course is designed to extend your basic chemistry course by providing an in-depth study of fundamental concepts.  Emphasis will be placed upon laboratory experiences and problem solving.  Pre-requisites include successful completion of Chemistry I and Algebra II (concurrently will be accepted as well).

CLASS BEHAVIOR

1.       No behavior that keeps others from learning will be tolerated.

2.       You will respect the rights of every individual in class.  Please raise

your hand when you want to ask a question or express a thought.

3.       The prep room and the lab area are off limits unless given permission.

4.       No food, drinks, or tobacco products are allowed in the room.

DISCIPLINE

1.       First Offense – verbal warning                      2. Second Offense – parent phone call and a detention

3.       Third Offense – Administrative Referral

Detentions will be held on the data I choose. If you cannot serve the assigned detention, an administrative detention will be given as a replacement!

TARDIES

1.       When you enter the classroom late, place your pass in the blue box in the back of the room, marked “tardy passes.” Do not interrupt the class.

2.       All tardies will be marked in the grade book and school policy will be followed.  Missing more than 30 minutes of any hour of class equals 1 absence from the class. School policy is as follows:

Second tardy = 1 hour administrative detention

Third tardy = 2 hour administrative detention

Anything following = Saturday school

MAKE-UP WORK

Each student is responsible for getting missed assignments due to an excused absence.  Failure to complete any missing work in the allotted time will result in a zero. I Will Not Come To You and I Do Not Accept Late Work!!  After an unexpected absence, go to the back of the room and read the calendar where you will find all of the day’s activities.  For each day you are absent, you will have an equal number of days plus one to make up the missed work.

1.       Any dittos that need to be completed will be in the literature organizer(back of room)

2.       All quizzes and tests need to be made up within 1-2 days following an absence. If you miss the day of a quiz/test, you will be expected to take it on the day you return.

3.       All missed assignments that are graded need to be handed to me within the first 5 minutes of class.

4.       If you are absent on a lab day, you must make up the lab immediately.  Chemicals will only be available 1 week after the original date.

5.       If you are absent for a school-sponsored activity you are to get the assignments before the absence and are responsible for completing those assignments upon your return to class.

HOMEWORK

Chapter homework (Web Assign) will be given out at the start of a new chapter and will be due several days before the chapter test.  It will be graded.  Throughout the chapter additional practice homework will be given.  It will not be graded every time but is mandatory (class participation) for reviewing daily concepts and problem solving techniques.

OUTLINES & DCI’s

Chapter outlines are expected for each chapter.  On the day of your test, you will hand in your outline.  Occasionally it will be graded.  In addition, several DCI’s will be assigned within the chapter and expected to be completed.

LABS

Each student is required to participate in lab activities. These are essential for success on the test. All of your laboratory work will be kept in a section of your notebook. Lab reports and/or data sheets will be completed for all major labs.  Details on formatting will be discussed later.

Summer assignment is part of the 1st nine weeks class/homework All other 9 weeks class/homework will be 10% and reactions will be 10%)

CHEATING

Cheating is not allowed!! Giving or receiving help on a test and/or quiz, or copying any form of lab report and/or homework are all examples of cheating.  Please keep your personal integrity intact with me.  A zero, a phone call home, and a detention will be issued if found to be cheating.  Calculators and other materials will not be shared during testing situations.

STUDY GROUPS/GET HELP

Please remember that I am working with you, not against you.  We are working as a team, against them, the test makers.  I want each person to pass the exam so take advantage of after school help, attempt all assignments given,  complete all the labs, purchase a test prep book and join a study group.  If we act as a team, no one will be left behind!

If you need help, make sure you ask for it.  Don’t wait until you are too far behind to recover.

COLLEGE CREDIT

You will have the opportunity to earn college credit for chemistry by passing the AP Chemistry exam May 13, 2008. (A potential of 5-10 hours)
