According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (2002 data), health services is one of the largest industries in the country, boasting more than eleven million jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also predicts that by 2010, the health services field will grow by more than twenty-five percent. This means that there will be nearly three million new jobs created in the healthcare industry during the next seven years. Furthermore, of the twenty occupations projected to grow the fastest during the next ten years. nine are health service related. In order to successfully prepare students for these important positions, Apopka High School created the Medical Careers Magnet Program in the early 1990s.

The Medical Careers Magnet is designed to prepare motivated students for a future in the dramatically expanding fields of medicine and healthcare related careers. Medical Careers Magnet students may engage in a rigorous college preparatory academic program, including dual-enrollment and advanced placement course s.

This magnet program combines intensive didactic study with real world application of medical procedures. The course of study culminates in the opportunity to spend an entire semester participating in career shadowing and clinical experiences in healthcare fields such as: dentistry, veterinary medicine, emergency medicine, radiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, nursing, pediatrics, labor and delivery, cardiology and surgery.

The Apopka High School Medical Careers Magnet Program offers students the most comprehensive medical curriculum in Orange County. Students throughout the Orange County school district are eligible for this program if they demonstrate consistent achievement in all course work. All students must provide evidence of good attendance and exemplary conduct, teacher recommendations, and parental permission. Participating students enter the Medical Careers Magnet as freshmen and a limited number may enter as sophomores.

Transportation is only provided for students who attend a magnet program at their zoned high school.

This magnet is available to all students throughout Orange County.
